Licensure Pathways
There are multiple ways to earn a teaching license in Maryland. Traditional teacher preparation programs, offered at 22 Maryland colleges and universities, lead to teacher licensure and, in many cases, an advanced degree. These programs are considered traditional routes to teacher education and can be part-time or full-time. They are available all over the state, so you can find one that fits your schedule and needs.

Several alternative teacher training programs are available throughout Maryland. In this alternative route to licensure, “resident” teachers receive professional learning before accepting a position in the classroom while they complete their preparation. Resident teachers can be in front of a classroom earning a teacher’s salary in just a few months.

Conditional Teacher Licensure
In Maryland, districts may hire individuals with a bachelor’s degree (in any subject) and issue a Conditional License if they cannot hire a professionally licensed teacher for that position. Once hired, you must complete a pathway to licensure before the expiration of your Conditional License (between 3-5 years depending on the area of licensure).
Don’t wait! Apply now if teaching is your future.
